Yesterday's Pages

by Dale Neibaur, @1976

Old photograph albums
About you and me
Pressed flowers and pictures
And a love song's melody
The homecoming party
The harvest parade
Our big graduation
And the ballroom gown you made
I opened the album
And what did I see
A perfumed love letter
That you wrote once for me
So very long ago...

Yesterday's pages
Have yellowed with age
The handwriting's faded
And there's dust upon each page
But each curling letter
And each loving phrase
Bring memories of you and me
And laughing lazy days
Of joy.

I read through the letter
'Till tears blurred the lines
Then closed up the album
Of our life and times
From off a shelf
I pulled again
My journal, and anew
I read the poems
My loving heart
Had written there for you.

Yesterday's pages
Have yellowed with age
The handwriting's faded
And there's dust on every page
But each curling letter
And each loving line
Remind me of the love I swore
I'd give you for all time
I guess I'll never understand
Just why you had to go
The memories bring tears to me
I love you even though
You're gone.
