They Told Me

by Marvin Rytting

They told me
That our love was not
The true love that would last through time:
That we were young and could not know
What love and life were all about.
They said that you would not remain
The only object of my dreams,
That soon my eyes would stray away
To gaze at others.

And when you left,
They told me that the world
Was still a lovely place.
They said that I would soon get o'er
The pain I felt when you were gone;
That I would all too soon forget
The sweetness of your radiant smile,
The texture of your hair,
The haunting trace of your perfume
That filed the air whenever you were near,
The effervescence of your voice,
The soft touch of your lips,
The joy I felt when you were close
To let me know that you were mine.
They told me all this --
And they were right.
