Hearst Castle Guest House

 

Long ago I heard a story of a castle on a hill; a castle made from pieces of ancient buildings acquired all over Europe, then stitched together on a hilltop in the middle of the deserted central California coast.  I've been curious ever since, wanting someday to travel to this unusual, uniquely American place.  Finally the opportunity arose, and last week Terry and I drove from L.A. north up the California coast to San Simeon.  At last I saw the European castle on the California hill.

The truth about this place is much stranger than the story I thought I knew.
