The Crystal Oak is a quiet place where a small group of friends can publish what pleases us. It is meant to be a lasting nexus, a neighborhood tree house where we can get together and explore the changing shape of our lives. It begins as the seed of an idea, it will sprout as a small sapling. Hopefully it will grow into something beautiful and unique.

The name Crystal Oak is a fusion of two spaces. I have been a software engineer for many years. A computer program has always been a crystal tree in my mind: fractal, magical, composed of light and thought and impossibly fragile. But the space I hope to create here is warmer and more organic; it is dedicated to the human arts and the impulse of creativity that lives in us all. It is my hope to share with friends and family some of the things that have shaped my life. And I hope that they will join in and preserve some of the memories they cherish.

The impetus to create Crystal Oak began, as so many things in my life do, as an annoyance. My internet service provider was acquired by a different company (for the second time in as many years) and I was obliged to email all my friends and business acquaintances to tell them my email address was changing again. Worse, the new company allowed only one email account, so my wife and children were forced to move their accounts to a free web provider. Adding insult to injury, as soon as the changeover was completed I found myself deluged with junk mail.

I decided to create a new space for myself and my family on the internet. We wish to invite in any friends who might care to join us. Here will be a place where email addresses need not change with ISPs or careers. We can put down roots, and hopefully keep better track of the people who matter most in our lives.
